Given I work as a communications and fundraising professional for one of the NGOs who is supporting people to get their lives back to normal as quickly as possible in the aftermath of the floods across Queensland and given that I’ve spent the last few days raising substantial funds for this important cause, I spent tonight reflecting on how I should personally direct some funds (the little I have to give).

In the short-term, I’ve decided to give to Wildcare Australia. It’s likely I will give more next pay day to a human services organisation (probably my own), but for now I wanted to ensure the little critters get a look see and to give the organisation a boost of faith that there are people out there who do care about and value their work. I gave to Wildlife Victoria during the bushfires, so it kinda makes sense to continue in that fashion (remember that photo of the koala drinking from a water bottle?).

In true lazy fundraising style, I’ve pasted the info about this cause below as it convinced me this was a wildlife organisation who had their finger on the pulse of how wildlife could best be cared. These volunteers have a unique set of skills. As a grassroots organisation, even $10 from you will help them make a difference.

Queensland Floods – Appeal for help for our local wildlife

It is such a devastating time for everyone in the South-East Queensland region and whilst we do not wish to take anything away from the human impact of the flooding, our wildlife and our volunteer carers are really struggling at this time.Â

Many of our key wildlife carers are being stretched beyond limits with the rapid increase in the number of animals and birds coming into care due to the flooding and seemingly continuous adverse weather conditions. With all of the rain recently, there was already little food out there for our native animals – In time they end up thin and exhausted and the more fortunate ones in care with our volunteer wildlife carers.

We have also had a number of carers that have had to evacuate and the wildlife in their care have had to be placed with other wildlife carers that may have already been at capacity. In addition to these influxes, carers have had to hold back on releasing numbers of animals otherwise ready for release back to their natural habitats, until these unsettled weather conditions abate.

We are receiving requests on ways in which people can help our local wildlife. So if anyone is able to assist with the financial cost of this increased burden on our volunteers, we desperately need help with the following:-

Donations of gift cards from supermarkets or fuel stations – for any denomination – even a $10 donation can cover the cost of feeding a Kookaburra for a week or assist our rescuers in the transport of injured animals to a local wildlife hospital. These can be posted to Wildcare Australia, PO Box 2379, Nerang Mail Centre, Qld 4211.Â

Cash donations – these can be made by visiting the Wildcare website – www.wildcare.org.au – and clicking on ‘DONATE’ towards the top of the page. Donations can be made by credit card via our secure online service.Â

Cheques/money orders… can be posted to the above address also.Â

Bank deposit/transfer – please treasurer@wildcare.org.au to request bank account detailsÂ

Deposits of $2 and over are tax deductible.
