Greens support funded training for disabled people, but call for caution

Wednesday, December 27th, 2006

While the Oppositions alteration to the federal governments current undignified welfare policy is a step in the right direction, Rudd and his leadership team must make it clear to Australians with disabilities that financial support will also be available to them without strings attached.

Queensland Greens Social Justice Spokesperson Elissa Jenkins said she agreed it was a great idea to offer funded training places to those on a disability pension who request them.

The empowerment of people with disabilities to take control of their own lives is a basic human right and, as such, its essential that optional training opportunities be adequately funded.

Compulsory Work For The Dole projects and Welfare to Work programs are a band-aid solution and, because they often fall into the category of political, popularist game-play, they must be met with caution.

Similarly, any promises of training should not be met with a threat to withhold payments.

While The Greens support increased funding for workforce programs and job creation, coercive requirements to work should be completely removed from welfare policy.

To win government in 2007 Labor must separate itself from Howard Governments tough criteria for welfare recipients, she said.

Ms Jenkins also said it wasnt enough to simply say that training would be available to disabled people and sole parents.

As any student will attest, the hidden costs of study are often not met by Youth Allowance and Austudy payments.

With more and more students being forced to fund their full-time studies by taking on paid work, itd be foolish to think that promises of funded training for disabled people and single parents are as simple as waving around “work-first” rhetoric.

In the long-term, all levels of government must unite to ensure that children with disabilities have access to adequate support services to enable them to participate fully in schools and society.

Until this is the case, inequities in opportunities of disabled people to find fulfilling work will continue, she said.

Sorry Mulrunji.

But sorry just isn’t good enough, is it?

What about justice?

Well that’s completely absent too – as always.

Shame Queensland, SHAME.

I am attending Global Young Greens Conference, Kenya

Friday, December 8th, 2006

It is my honour to announce that I will be attending the Global Young Greens Conference and World Social Forum in Nairobi, Kenya mid January 2007.

This is the founding congress of the Global Young Greens and apparently the World Social Forum attracts over 100,000 people.

I have received $500 funding from Australian Greens to attend. I hope to present a workshop, so if anyone has any suggestions of Queensland issues you’d like to see hit the world stage, please let me know.

Although I don’t consider myself ‘young’ anymore, anyone under 35 is welcome to attend the Global Young Greens Conference and I am currently communicating nervously with fellow Greens from around Australia and New Zealand planning flights and accommodation and vaccinations and safety concerns.

While I’m over there, for personal reasons, I hope to visit an orphanage and for FUN reasons I plan to go on a quick wildlife safari.

We will also go on an excursion to one or more NGO projects in the Nairobi area.

We will be sleeping in tents for the duration of the trip and we bring our own mattresses, cushions and sheets. I’ve been told it will be very hot.

Visiting Baxter Detention Centre Convergence in 2005 was a life-changing experience for me. I expect this is going to be equally – if not more – amazing.

I look forward to sharing my stories with you upon my return. Maybe I’ll organise an information-sharing evening or something if enough people are interested.

Please support the Global Young Greens by attending the Bat Cruise Fundraiser this Wednesday evening and asking your organisation to contribute funds to help send young people in need from the Asia Pacific.

Refugee Action Collective Xmas Party

Wednesday, December 6th, 2006

I don’t know what it is about RAC folk, but they’re all so lovely! We come from many political spectrums, but seem to come together in solidarity in an effort to reverse this country’s appalling policy of mandatory detention.

Tonight’s Christmas celebration was no exception and we enjoyed an incredible meal at Chopan Charcoal Restaurant, 2/2 Baroona Rd Milton. This serves beautifully fresh and homely Afghan meals in a pleasant setting – a restaurant owned and run by Afghani refugees. Visit them tonight!

I am fascinated by the culture and country of Afghanistan, so it was wonderful being as close as I can to that experience without being able to visit the war-torn country itself.

Hicks Rally Planning Meeting

Monday, December 4th, 2006

This Aussie fella “lives” in solitary confinement with the lights on 24/7 at Guantanomo Bay Prison without charge for 5 years. That’s not living.

Tonight we finalised the plans for this Saturday’s rally. Join me to speak out against THIS appalling human rights injustice at 2pm Queens Park.

Free young David Hicks. Send him home before Christmas.

It’s only fair.

Greens State Council today

Greens State Council today.

I think I enjoyed this morning’s fishing at Curramundi Beach better.

Oh it was important though. Got lots of important business done and dusted.
