Young Greens set to Rock The Vote

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

The Queensland Greens commend the union movements initiative to organise Rock The Vote which is on at the RNA Showgrounds on Saturday.

The concert, which has been organised to encourage young people to enrol to vote, will also highlight the injustices of Howard governments ongoing erosion of workers rights.

Queensland Greens industrial relations spokesperson, Elissa Jenkins, who is attending Saturdays event, said music was a great way to engage with young people.

Im a big Spiderbait fan and hugely supportive of Australian rock, so Im looking forward to the day.

I havent seen New Zealands Shihad live before and am keen to catch them, particularly now that theyve changed their name back, she said.

Elissa, who led an enrol to vote campaign for the Queensland Greens during the 2004 federal election, said it was really important for young people to get in early this time when it comes to enrolling to vote.

Under John Howards new system, the day after he calls the election it will be too late to enrol.

This is unfair for young people who may be caught off guard by not organising themselves until its too late.

Its an effective way for Howard to silence the voice of the youth and he knows what hes doing.

His values are not in line with the values of young people, so hed rather not hear from them.

Environmental and social justice issues are too tough for him to tackle, but young people are keen to see these areas made a priority, she said.

Ms Jenkins said, to ensure fair workplace conditions are put back on the agenda in Australia, the Senate must be saved from the Coalition in 2007 and a vote for The Greens in the Senate is the only way this can be done.

Howard knows that a high percentage of young people vote for The Greens and, if young people dont enrol, they cant vote for us, she said.

Wet Wet Wet Walk Against Warming

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

Today was a fabulous day. It was a great ‘Walk Against Warming’. I don’t really know how many people were there (1000-1500?), but it was definitely more than twice as many people as last year. I can’t imagine how many people would’ve attended had it not rained. Impressive result and just goes to show the marked increase in interest (and action) from Brisbane folk. Perhaps they had all seen Al Gore’s movie. I don’t really care how people get educated and passionate about Climate Change – as long as they do. :)

We met at Queen’s Park in the City where there were a few speeches they couldn’t be heard over the downpouring of rain. An umbrella and a waterproof jacket rather lamely tried to keep me from getting wet. I discovered that ‘I can’t jump puddles’ as I stepped into a gushing gutter of rainwater. At that point it was time to take off the shoes. We walked across the William Jolly. We stopped the traffic. We got honks. We congregated again at Musgrave Park where speeches were drowned out again. Lips were turning blue and people gradually left to find shelter and warmth.

It was great to see young kids as well as high school students. The teenagers in particular provided an added excitement and enthusiasm and FUN which warmed the cockles of my heart. It is nice to contrast this with the more millilant style of protests that are sometimes staged. Promoting it as a ‘walk’ rather than a ‘protest’ certainly offers families and individuals a very real feeling of inclusiveness and community.

It was absolutely wonderful to see so many Greens members out in action. I met at least 20 Greens members from West Brisbane, North Brisbane, Mt Coot-tha, Boonah-Beaudesert, Yeerongpilly, Bayside, Redlands. It was a tremendous presence from The Greens and certainly showed our level of solidarity with and commitment to this particular issue. Nice one!!

Tonight was the briefing meeting for the Global Young Greens. Had a good chat about fundraising particularly. Encouraged those who attended to register and then decide from there whether they want to actually commit to going.

Thank you thank you!

Media Release: Howard has stopped watching your boss (disturbing)

Thursday, November 2nd, 2006

That the Commonwealth has stopped monitoring the Work Choices laws is a disturbing reality for Australian workers, leaving workers out on their own to tackle the complex employment landscape.

Todays revelation by the Senate Employment Workplace Relations and Education Estimates Committee highlights the disregard the Howard government has for hard working Australians.

Queensland Greens industrial relations spokesperson, Elissa Jenkins, said the Senate must be saved from the Coalition in 2007 and a vote for The Greens in the Senate is the only way this can be done.

This is the only way Australians will be guaranteed fairer wages and conditions,” she said.

This will ensure all Australians have a healthy work/life balance that involves spending more time with their family and giving back to the community.

Our goal is to invest the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission with the power and sufficient resources to actively audit the performance of employers.

Greens policy is to enforce and promote genuine compliance with equal employment opportunity and anti-discrimination legislation.

I call on the federal government to abolish Australian workplace agreements and non-union collective agreements, and encourage the making of multi-employer agreements,” she said.
