In last week’s Wynnum Herald a Tingalpa resident wrote a letter to the editor asking how I intend to approach the problem of noise and air pollution from Brisbane Airport.

About a month ago I met a resident at Murarrie who spoke of planes often flying over every three minutes plus all through the night. They are so loud that, when he’s outside, he wears ear protection.

I was appalled. This is not a lifestyle any Australian should be forced to endure.

The Greens have a longstanding policy to pressure Brisbane Airport into becoming a good neighbour by banning older, noisier planes or imposing a curfew.

I believe a curfew is a brilliant idea – one that has worked successfully at other airports such as the busy Sydney Airport which has a curfew between 11pm and 6am every day.

Failing this, I will campaign for federal funding to soundproof homes under the flightpath.
